Foundation for Change aims to provide a sophisticated response to complex disadvantage, tackling social exclusion and enabling people who have experienced significant difficulties with drugs or alcohol to participate in society.

The majority of those affected by substance misuse come from severely deprived and poor backgrounds. Poor educational experiences lead to a lack of qualifications, resulting in chronically low expectations among those affected by drug/alcohol misuse about their ability to change to their lives. Efforts to build self-esteem and social capital are minimal, often leading to short-term solutions and resulting in high relapse rates leading to a costly ‘revolving door’ culture.

Bob Bharij, director of operations, is very keen to get engaged with the Rainmaker Foundation’s Charity Accelerator programme. “We celebrated our third birthday in April 2017 and, given the barriers experienced when we began and those we continue to experience, we are incredibly proud of how far we have come, especially over the last six months… We are now seeking more intensive and structured support to help us establish a sustainable and achievable plan for growth which would see us create the greatest impact rather than having the highest output.”

Foundation for Change provides a range of accessible and engaging psychology courses for around 120 per year that aim to develop greater self-esteem and emotional understanding. Individuals are able to recover from drugs and alcohol as well as leave the treatment system empowered to make a long-lasting, positive change to their lives.
